Vaccinations
While there are any kinds of diseases out there that can affect your pet, there’s no need to panic. There are various ways we can help you protect your pet from harmful pathogens in their environment, and cat, dog, and ferret vaccinations are a prime example.
At Companion Vernon Hills, we’re just as concerned about your pet’s health as you are. As your pet’s full-time caregiver, you may be worried about virus outbreaks or potential threats awaiting them at your travel destination. We can discuss and break down all of your pet’s essential needs to help you design the most effective vaccination plans in Vernon Hills, IL.
What Exactly do Vaccines do For Pets?
Animal vaccines function similar to human vaccines–they serve to strengthen and reinforce the immune system’s ability to resist infection.
When your pet receives a vaccine, the vaccine releases antigens which mimic disease-causing organisms. Subsequently, this triggers the immune system to respond by producing antibodies to seek and destroy the antigens. As a result, your pet’s immune system will be able to recognize future infections and either resist them completely or reduce their severity and help your pet recover quickly.

Choosing A Long Term Vaccination Plan for Your Pet
Core vaccines are the most essential for your pet’s health and safety. The rabies and distemper viruses are both highly contagious and life-threatening. Canine, feline, or ferret, indoor or outdoor, your pet will need to be vaccinated for these diseases. While technically a non-core vaccine, Leptospirosis is also highly recommended for dogs.
In addition to our core vaccines, we also offer non-core or “lifestyle” vaccines. These are given based on your pet’s lifestyle and potential health risks. If they are likely to encounter Bordetella or feline leukemia, we will recommend these vaccines as part of their wellness program.
Various factors help us decide which lifestyle vaccines are most important for your pet:
- Size/weight
- Age
- Breed
- Medical and health history
- Frequency of travel
- Environment (Do they live with other pets? Do they live near wildlife?)
